Advice from your peers…
- Find out how to get the ACT/SAT fee waiver for foster kids. Ask a fellow student or a guidance counselor what you need to do.
- Enroll in the SAT prep class at school and take practice tests.
- Time yourself on the practice tests so you won’t be surprised during the test.
- Find free practice questions on the SAT and ACT websites. Both websites have tips on test taking.
- Sign up to receive the SAT sample question of the day via email.
- Find out how the test is graded. Find out if there is a penalty for not answering a question versus answering it and getting it wrong.
- Talk to other students who have taken the test. Ask them to tell you what it was like. Ask them how they prepared and any advice they have.
- Take both the ACT and the SAT. You may do better on one than the other.
- Find out how the colleges you are applying to use the test. If you take it more than one time, do they use the last score you submitted or the highest score or some combination of the best subtest scores?
- Register early and take time to prepare. Study and prepare.
- Get sleep the night before the test and eat before you go in so you aren’t hungry.
