Advice from your peers…

  • Set goals. Make sure you have time for everything in your life. I work in the morning
and go to school at night. School is over by 7 at night. I play with my boy after
school and I wake him up in the morning to play before going to work.
  • Schedule your classes to allow time to spend with your children. Some parents
scheduled their classes on Tuesday and Thursdays only so they would have the other
days to work and spend with the children. Others took some on-line classes so they
could be home more and still make progress toward their degree.
  • Look for childcare arrangements that will be close to school and work. Find out if
the school has childcare services on site.
  • Manage your time and your money to ensure you can provide for your children—
both in terms of parenting time as well as taking care of their physical needs.
  • Savings is even more important when you have children because they have
emergencies that come up and you have to take care of them.
  • Persist with school even though it is hard. In the long run, it will pay off –not only
financially but also by being a role model for your child.
  • Don’t put off your class assignments until the last minute because your child may
get sick and you may not have the time you thought you would have to complete
your course work. Get your work done early even if it means getting up early or
    staying up later.
  • Look to your children for inspiration when times get tough.
  • Find a friend who is willing to serve as a backup for childcare—when babysitters
don’t show up, when you need extra time to spend studying. If you have a friend
with children, make arrangements to help each other with child care while the other
    one studies or works.
